When STHL founder Dan Henner was ten years old, he received a Christmas gift from his grandmother, a table hockey game, that would plant the seed that eventually blossomed into the Syracuse Table Hockey League. Dan played the game consistently from that Christmas until he was 15, when life outside the 'blue lines' and adulthood relegated the tabletop rink to the attic.
A few decades later, in 2023, Henner found himself watching the table hockey world championships on ESPN and the old rod hockey spark was reignited. With no Iocal Central New York leagues in existence, he reached out to the organizers of a league in New York city, and subsequently joined the New York Table Hockey League. The positive experience of the competition and camaraderie there incentivized him to purchase a custom game himself, and attempt to form a Syracuse league. He started a campaign to recruit friends, neighbors, acquaintances, and launched the Syracuse Table Hockey League Facebook page in June of 2024.
Around a year later, Henner had managed to bring in four players and the 'original five' of the STHL was formed. A centrally located competition venue was secured at the Baldwinsville American Legion, thanks to a friend of Henner's, and the league had a home. The first official season date was held in October of 2025 and six months later the STHL is now 10 players strong and competing monthly. Henner and other STHL players also play in the NYTHL, and the top two NYC players traveled to Syracuse in March 2026 to play in the STHL for the first time. Thanks to grandma's gift all those years ago, the Syracuse Table Hockey League is now firmly established and growing.
